KIDNEY FAILURE

What is kidney failure?
If you have kidney disease, it does not mean that you will develop kidney failure.
You can lose up to 90 per cent of kidney function before feeling sick. In many cases, the signs of disease aren’t noticed until the kidneys are close to failure.
What causes kidney failure?
In most cases, kidney failure is caused by other health problems that have done permanent damage (harm) to your kidneys little by little, over time.
Kidney failure is the last (most severe) stage of chronic kidney disease. This is why kidney failure is also called end-stage renal disease, or ESRD for short.
Some causes of kidney failure includes;
Diabetes(diabetic nephropathy) -  if not well managed, diabetes can cause kidney damage. it is the most common cause of ESRD.
High blood pressure (hypertension) glomerulonephritis - swelling or inflammation of the tiny filtering units (nephrons) in the kidney. the second most common cause of ESRD.
Other problems that can cause kidney failure include:
Autoimmune diseases, such as lupus and IgA nephropathy
Genetic diseases (diseases you are born with), such as polycystic kidney disease  , polycystic kidney disease - is an inherited condition that causes hundreds of cysts to form in the kidney
Nephrotic syndrome
Urinary tract problems
urinary reflux (reflux nephropathy) - a bladder-valve problem that allows urine to flow back into the kidneys, causing scarring medications -
Some drugs such as lithium and cyclosporin can cause kidney failure. Continued misuse of compound analgesic preparations (now banned) was once a common cause of permanent kidney disease
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), taken in normal therapeutic doses,
Sometimes the kidneys can stop working very suddenly (within two days). This type of kidney failure is called acute kidney injury or acute renal failure.
Common causes of acute renal failure include:
Heart attack, Illegal drug use and drug abuse, Not enough blood flowing to the kidneys and urinary tract problems
This type of kidney failure is not always permanent. Your kidneys may go back to normal or almost normal with treatment and if you do not have other serious health problems.
Having one of the health problems that can lead to kidney failure does not mean that you will definitely have kidney failure.
Living a healthy lifestyle and working with your doctor to control these health problems can help your kidneys work for as long as possible.
Kidney failure, also called end-stage renal disease (ESRD), is the last stage of chronic kidney disease. When your kidneys fail, it means they have stopped working well enough for you to survive without dialysis or a kidney transplant.

WHY ARE KIDNEY SO IMPORTANT

Why are kidneys so important?

Your kidneys are important because they do three essential things:
1. Kidneys regulate waterFor your body to work properly, it must contain just the right amount of water. One of the important jobs of the kidneys is to remove excess water from the body or to retain water when the body needs more.
2. Kidneys remove waste products and help to balance the body's minerals
Many of the substances in the blood and other body fluids must be kept at the correct level for the body to function properly. For example, sodium (salt) and potassium are minerals that come from food. The body needs these minerals for good health, but they must be kept at certain levels. When the kidneys are working properly, extra minerals, such as sodium and potassium, leave your body in the urine. The kidneys also help to adjust the levels of other minerals, such as calcium and phosphate (which are important for bone strength, growth and other functions).

Your kidneys help remove waste products, such as urea and creatinine, from your body. Urea and other wastes are made when the body breaks down protein, such as meat. Creatinine is a waste product of the muscles. As kidney function decreases, the levels of urea and creatinine in the blood increase. The creatinine level in the blood is a very useful measure of kidney function. It is measured by a simple blood test.
3. Kidneys produce hormones
Normal kidneys also make important chemicals in your body called hormones. These hormones circulate in the bloodstream like “messengers” and regulate blood pressure, red blood cell production and the calcium balance in your body.

Normal Blood Value Ranges

The amount of each substance in the blood can be measured in several ways: for example, millimoles (mmol), micromols (μmol) or grams per litre of blood (g/L). The numbers in the table show the range of the normal levels of various substances in the blood of a healthy person. Every lab has different normal values for serum creatinine because their autoanalyzers are different. Every lab also has the option of providing male and female ranges because they do differ based on muscle mass. The values shown above were taken from a Canadian reference lab.
* The GFR, or glomerular filtration rate, is a blood-related lab test. It provides a useful measure of kidney function. Sometimes it is called the eGFR or estimated glomerular filtration rate.

KIDNEY AWARENESS (IMPORTANCE OF THE KIDNEY)

Why Are the Kidneys So Important?

Most people know that a major function of the kidneys is to remove waste products and excess fluid from the body. These waste products and excess fluid are removed through the urine. The production of urine involves highly complex steps of excretion and re-absorption. This process is necessary to maintain a stable balance of body chemicals.

The critical regulation of the body's salt, potassium and acid content is performed by the kidneys. The kidneys also produce hormones that affect the function of other organs. For example, a hormone produced by the kidneys stimulates red blood cell production. Other hormones produced by the kidneys help regulate blood pressure and control calcium metabolism.
The kidneys are powerful chemical factories that perform the following functions:
  • remove waste products from the body
  • remove drugs from the body
  • balance the body's fluids
  • release hormones that regulate blood pressure
  • produce an active form of vitamin D that promotes strong, healthy bones
  • control the production of red blood cells

Soldiers demand military police takes over lynching investigations

Soldiers demand military police takes over lynching investigations

Soldiers demand military police takes over lynching investigations. The officers and men of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have registered their anger over the killing of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama in the presence of the Military High Command. At a durbar organised by the Chief of Defence (CDS), Lt General Obed Akwa with the soldiers at Burma Camp in Accra on Thursday, some of them said they should be allowed to avenge the death of their colleague.u

Lt. General Akwa, had a tough time calming the emotions of the soldiers as many said they should be allowed to avenge the death of their colleague.

The soldiers also expressed impatience with the pace of the police investigations, which had so far led to the arrest of about 14, with seven of them arraigned in court.

The seven suspects are said to have played various roles in the gruesome murder.

The soldiers were particularly incensed by the videos of the gruesome act on social media, and wondered why the military police could not take over the investigations.

“We have military police. It is not in every instance that we allow the civilian police to be telling us about evidence. You have seen something clearly and you are telling me about evidence. What more evidence do you want from this? The Ghana Armed Forces has the military police. We can handle our things. It is not everything that you take to the civil police,” one soldier said.

It took the CDS some time to cool down tempers and assured that the police were firmly on the ground and would leave no stone unturned, to ensure that the perpetrators of the heinous deed were made to face the full rigours of the law.

Lt Gen Akwa assured that the family of the late Captain would be taken care of as already a number of philanthropists had contacted the Military High Command to ask what they could do for the young family.

“In fact one person wanted to see me today asking what he can do to support the education of the two children. I have no doubt in my mind that the family of this officer will never be left in the lurch.

“The Vice-President, Dr Mahamudu made a statement on Wednesday that they will support the family in the organisation of the funeral and subsequently in the welfare and the upkeep of the wife and the children,” Lt Gen Akwa added:

Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama was lynched by the youth of Denkyira Obuasi last Monday on suspicion that he was an armed robber.

The officer was on operational duties at the Alaska C&G Mining Company at Amenase Forest, near Diaso in the Central Region.

He was said to be jogging when some residents accused him of being part of a robbery gang that stormed Denkyira-Obuasi the previous day.

The Military High Command has asked officers and men of the Ghana Armed forces not to engage in any reprisal attacks over the murder of their colleague, Captain Maxwell Mahama by a mob at Denkyira Obuasi last Monday.

The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Obed Akwa has called on officers and men of the Ghana Armed forces not to engage in any reprisal attacks, following the gruesome murder of Captain Maxwell Adam Mahama at Denkyira Obuasi last Monday, by a mob.

Reiterating earlier messages from President Nana Akufo-Addo and former President, J.J Rawlings, the CDS assured the military that all those involved in the act would not escape justice.

DCE suspended over Capt. Mahama’s killingl

President Nana Akufo-Addo has suspended the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Upper Denkyira West, Daniel Apiannin, following the murder of Captain Maxwell Mahama.

The decision to suspend him today [Thursday] *June 1, 2017, was confirmed by the Local Government and Rural Development Minister, Hajia Alima Mahama.l

The President has directed that we do some investigations on the matter and on his [Daniel Apiannin] conduct and report. In the interim, he is to hand over his duties to the Deputy Regional Minister [Thomas Agyei Baffour]. Therefore, for now, he has been suspended,” the minister stated.

Hajia Mahama noted that that investigation will cover_ _*“the recent events and what happened in the press – his utterances and all that.

_“We need to have a good view on that, find out what happened and thereafter, we will look at his actions and decide whether he should be relieved of his position. But in the interim, he is on suspension.”_

_According to the Minister, the decision is necessary to allow for investigations into the claims by the DCE, as well as the ongoing probe into the gruesome killing of the military officer._

_The DCE had made comments suggesting that the deceased and his colleagues were in the area to protect illegal Chinese miners, contrary to the police and the Military High Command’s claims that they were rather in the area on an anti-galamsey mission._

_The DCE’s comments, which angered many, was seen as a justification for the dastardly act by the angry youth, who claim to have lynched the officer because they thought he was an armed robber._

ABOUT THE KIDNEY

The kidneys are a pair of organs located in the back of the abdomen. Each kidney is about 4 or 5 inches long -- about the size of a fist.
The kidneys' function are to filter the blood. All the blood in our bodies passes through the kidneys several times a day. The kidneys remove wastes, control the body's fluid balance, and regulate the balance of electrolytes. As the kidneys filter blood, they create urine, which collects in the kidneys' pelvis -- funnel-shaped structures that drain down tubes called ureters to the bladder.
Each kidney contains around a million units called nephrons, each of which is a microscopic filter for blood. It's possible to lose as much as 90% of kidney function without experiencing any symptoms or problems.
